Culturally-Affirming Birth Support in North Carolina
Our birth support services honor your cultural birth traditions while providing evidence-based advocacy to ensure your family’s voice is heard in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Apex, and Cary birthing facilities.
Birth is a transformative journey that should be approached with both ancestral wisdom and modern knowledge. As your dedicated birth doula, I blend these approaches to create a birth experience that feels authentic to your family’s traditions while ensuring the best possible outcomes.
“Every birth story deserves to be written with respect for the family’s cultural heritage, personal preferences, and unique journey. My role is to hold space for these elements while providing informed, compassionate support.”
Whether you’re planning a hospital birth at UNC or Duke, a birth center experience, or a home birth in the Triangle area, my support is tailored to your specific needs and birthing environment. From prenatal preparation to postpartum support, I’m with you every step of the way.
Unlike many conventional birth services in North Carolina, we place special emphasis on honoring traditional practices that may have been passed down through your family for generations. These might include specific comfort measures, ceremonial elements, or postpartum traditions that hold deep meaning for your family.

Frequently Asked Questions About Birth Support
Common questions from Triangle area families
What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?
A midwife is a medical professional who provides clinical care, delivers babies, and can prescribe certain medications. As a doula, I provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support but do not perform clinical tasks or deliver babies. I work alongside your medical team (midwives, doctors, nurses) at Triangle area hospitals and birth centers to enhance your birth experience while they manage the medical aspects of your care.
When should I book your birth support services?
Most families in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Apex, and Cary book birth support services during the second trimester (around 20-24 weeks), but I occasionally have availability for families later in pregnancy as well. Since I take a limited number of clients per month to ensure dedicated availability, it’s best to reach out as soon as you’re interested. However, even if you’re in your third trimester, please contact me to check availability.
Do you support all types of births in the Triangle area?
Yes! I provide support for hospital births (at UNC, Duke, WakeMed, Rex, and other Triangle facilities), birth center births, and home births. I support unmedicated births, epidural births, and cesarean births with equal dedication. My role is to support your choices, not promote any particular type of birth. I believe the best birth is one where you feel informed, respected, and supported in your decisions.
How do you incorporate cultural traditions into hospital births?
I work with you during our prenatal sessions to identify the cultural elements that are most important to you, then collaborate with your medical team to incorporate these elements safely. This might include advocating for specific birthing positions, creating a particular atmosphere in the room, incorporating meaningful objects or music, respecting specific modesty concerns, facilitating cultural rituals immediately after birth, or helping family members participate in traditional ways. Many Triangle area hospitals are increasingly supportive of culturally diverse birth practices when presented respectfully and with clear communication.
What if you're already at another birth when I go into labor?
I carefully limit the number of clients I accept each month to minimize this possibility. However, since babies have their own timing, I maintain a network of trusted backup doulas throughout the Triangle who share my commitment to culturally-affirming care. You’ll have the opportunity to meet my backup doula during your pregnancy, and I ensure they’re fully briefed on your birth preferences and cultural considerations should they need to step in.
Do Triangle area hospitals allow doulas?
Yes, all major hospitals in the Triangle area (including UNC Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, WakeMed, and UNC Rex) recognize and welcome doulas as part of the birth team. Most hospitals in North Carolina count doulas as support persons rather than visitors, especially since the pandemic highlighted the value of continuous support during birth. I am familiar with the policies of local hospitals and have established professional relationships with many of the labor and delivery departments in the area.
